Ike Hitting A Rookie Wall?

Batting cleanup, Ryan Braun was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 16th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Marlins. More lineup shuffling...

Adam Stern was 0-1 against the Marlins.

Gabe Kapler was 0-2 against the Blue Jays.

Ike Davis was 0-4 against the Padres. Ike is 1 for his last 16.

Macha Making A Mockery Of His Lineup Card

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Twins.

Batting 2nd, Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the Mets. Can Ken Macha stop moving him around? Seriously, this is getting a little ridiculous. Braun is a great 3-hole hitter. Leave him be!

Kevin Youkilis was 0-4 against the Royals.

Ike Davis was 0-3 against the Brewers.

Adam Stern (he's back) was 0-1 against the Mets.

Gabe Kapler was 0-1 against the White Sox.

John Grabow pitched 2 innings and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 Ks against the Cardinals. William is right. I know these are junk innings, but Piniella is using him way too much.

My Brother The Slugger

It's that time of the year again. Now that my brother's sophomore season at Eastern Illinois is over, I will give you a brief recap.

Zach finished with a .353/.438/.575 line (1.013 OPS) in 53 games and 207 ABs. He hit 11 HRs, 13 doubles, drove in 47 runs, and scored 50 runs. He also swiped 12 bags in 15 attempts and reached base safely in 49 of the 53 games.

He led Eastern in just about every offensive category (average, hits, extra-base hits, HRs, doubles, total bases, RBIs, runs scored, and stolen bases). He was 2nd on the team in SLG, OBP, BBs, and HBP.

Zach accounted for 97 runs produced. The next closest total by anyone was 69 runs produced. His team's line was a pedestrian .281/.359/.384 (.743 OPS). That should speak for itself.

He also shifted to third base from right field, and while he may have been a little error-prone at times, he displayed good range and fielded the bunt well.

Moreover, his arm is very strong; you'll have to take my word for it. This was his first full season at third base. I think it's fair to say he was basically learning to play the position as he went along.

During the month of March, Zach struggled as he had never struggled before in a prolonged slump. But he eventually came out of it and turned his season around. For someone who is unaccustomed to scuffling, I believe he showed a lot of perseverance.

This summer, he'll be playing for the Morehead City Marlins in the Coastal Plain League.

It goes without saying that I'm proud of you, Zach, but I'll say it anyway. Couldn't ask for a better little brother.

Speaking Of SBs...

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 double (his 15th), 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 11th) against the Mets. Don't want to jinx him, but he hasn't been caught stealing yet.

Ike Davis was 1-5 with 1 HR (his 5th), 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Brewers.

Gabe Kapler was 0-1 with 1 BB, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the White Sox. He drove in a run by laying down a perfect bunt.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Twins.

Kevin Youkilis was used as a late inning defensive replacement at 1B against the Royals.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 hit and 1 K against the Tigers.

Kinsler Closing In On 100 SBs

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 double (his 7th), 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 4th) against the Twins. He needs just 5 more SBs for 100.

Batting cleanup, Ryan Braun was 1-4 with 1 run scored against the Mets.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-2 with 2 BBs and 2 runs scored against the Royals. A fitting day for the man who leads all of baseball in walks and runs scored.

Ike Davis was 0-4 against the Brewers.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits against the Cardinals.

Go Figure: Breslow 1 Hold, Grabow 7 Holds

Ike Davis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Phillies.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 run scored against the Royals.

Ryan Braun was 0-5 against the Astros.

Craig Breslow picked up his 1st hold of the season. He pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 K against the Orioles.

Feldman Still Trying To Find '09 Form

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 2 doubles (his 13th and 14th) against the Astros.

Ike Davis was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 9th), and 1 run scored against the Phillies.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-3 with 2 BBs and 2 runs scored against the Rays. Youk still has more BBs than Ks (40 to 27).

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Royals.

Scott Feldman picked up his 5th loss of the season. He went 6 2/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, 1 BB, and 0 Ks against the Royals. The 1 BB is a little deceiving, as Feldman had 2 wild pitches and hit 2 batters.

Breslow Quietly One Of The Best Relievers

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 HR (his 8th), 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Astros. This was an absolute bomb.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 RBI against the Royals. He was robbed of 2 hits.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-2 with 2 BBs and 1 run scored against the Rays.

Ike Davis was 0-3 with 1 BB against the Phillies.

Gabe Kapler was 0-3 against the Red Sox.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings on 1 hit, 1 BB, and 2 Ks against the Orioles. Breslow is once again having a terrific season. His WHIP is 1.15, his ERA is 2.45, and he has 19 Ks through 18 1/3 innings. He hasn't given up a run in his last 8 innings.

Monday, May 24, 2010

Youk Walking And Raking

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 BB, 1 HR (his 10th), 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Rays. In his last 8 games, Youk has hit 5 long balls.

Gabe Kapler was 0-1 against the Red Sox.

Columnist Michael Freund makes a compelling case for why baseball should catch on in Israel. Here's hoping his column in The Jerusalem Post resonates with some people in the Holy Land.

Grabow's Woes Continue

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 BB and 1 SB (his 3rd) against the Cubs.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 with 1 SB (his 10th) against the Twins.

Gabe Kapler was 1-1 with 1 double (his 2nd) and 1 run scored against the Astros.

John Grabow picked up his 7th hold of the season. He pitched 1 inning and gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 1 BB against the Rangers.

Ryan Braun was 0-6 against the Twins.

Kevin Youkilis had the night off and came in as a late inning defensive replacement at 1B against the Phillies.

Schoeneweis And Stern Are Sent Packing

The Brewers have optioned Adam Stern to AAA to make room for Carlos Gomez, and the Red Sox have designated Scott Schoeneweis for assignment.

Batting 3rd, Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 double (his 12th) against the Twins.

Ian Kinsler was 1-2 with 2 BBs and 1 run scored against the Cubs.

Ike Davis was 1-4 with 1 double (his 8th) and 1 RBI against the Yankees. Davis hit the RBI-double off Mariano Rivera.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-3 with 1 BB against the Phillies.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 scoreless inning against the Giants.

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Braun To Bat Cleanup As Well?

Kevin Youkilis was 2-4 with 1 HR (his 8th), 1 double (his 11th), 4 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Twins. Youk's line in the month of May is .411/.585/.786 for an OPS of 1.371.

Batting cleanup, Ike Davis was 3-5 with 2 doubles (his 6th and 7th) and 3 runs scored against the Nationals.

Batting 3rd, Ian Kinsler was 2-5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored against the Orioles.

Gabe Kapler was 2-2 with 1 run scored against the Yankees.

Adam Stern was 0-3 with 1 RBI against the Pirates. Stern made his 1st start in center field today.

Batting cleanup, Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the Pirates. Braun has been batting 3rd all year and has thrived there. He's started at cleanup 26 games in his career, and the numbers aren't too good. Granted, it's not the biggest sample size in the world (108 PAs), but I'd leave him in the three-hole.

Scott Feldman picked up his 2nd win of the season. He went 6 innings and gave up 4 runs on 12 hits, 1 BB, and 5 Ks against the Orioles. Considering he got hit around so much, 4 runs in 6 innings really isn't too bad. Definitely limited the damage.

John Grabow picked up his 3rd loss of the season. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 BBs against the Phillies.

Ike To Bat Cleanup

Special thanks to Rob Berkenblit for the photo.

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 BB (IBB), 1 double (his 11th), 1 RBI, 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 9th) against the Pirates.

Batting 3rd, Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 BB and 1 RBI against the Orioles.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Twins. Youk leads all of baseball in walks.

Batting cleanup, Ike Davis was 1-4 against the Nationals. Jerry Manuel has stated that Davis will bat cleanup for the foreseeable future. I am actually not a fan of this move. Putting way too much pressure on a rookie, if you ask me.

Gabe Kapler was 0-2 against the Yankees.

John Grabow picked up his 6th hold of the season. He pitched 1 inning and gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 1 K. Maybe I spoke too soon when I thought he had turned it around...

6-15, 6 BBs, 4 HRs, 7 RBIs, 7 Runs Scored, 1 Win

Kevin Youkilis was 2-3 with 2 BBs, 1 HR (his 7th), 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Yankees. Youk's 6th inning blast gives him 100 for his career. He joins Hank Greenberg, Al Rosen, Sid Gordon, Shawn Green, and Ryan Braun as the only JMLs to hit 100 or more HRs.

Batting 3rd, Ian Kinsler was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 HR (his 1st), 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Angels. Told you not to worry about that HR drought. There is one thing, though. Kinsler was caught stealing for the 3rd time this year. For a guy whose success rate coming into this season was 87.5%, 2 SBs out of 5 attempts is a little disconcerting. Looks like that ankle hasn't fully healed.

Ryan Braun was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 HR (his 7th), 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the Reds.

Batting 5th, Ike Davis was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 HR (his 4th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. Davis has been batting 6th for most of the season.

Gabe Kapler was 1-2 with 1 BB, 1 HBP, and 1 run scored against the Indians.

Adam Stern was 0-1 against the Reds.

Craig Breslow picked up his 1st win of the year. He pitched 1 scoreless inning on 2 Ks against the Mariners.

Monday, May 17, 2010

I Was There, Man

Kevin Youkilis was 2-5 with 1 HR (his 6th), 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Yankees. Youk needs just 1 more HR for 100.

Batting 3rd, Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 double (his 6th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Angels.

Kinsler has yet to go deep in the 17 games he's played this season. I wouldn't put too much stock in it, though; Kinsler has a history of HR droughts. In 2006, he went 19 games without a HR. In 2007, he went 22 games without a HR. In 2008, he went 29 games without a HR. And last year, he went 20 games without a HR.

Ryan Braun was 1-5 against the Reds. Since coming back from a left elbow contusion, Braun is 3 for his last 17.

Gabe Kapler was 1-2 against the Indians.

Ike Davis was 0-2 with 1 BB, 1 HBP, and 1 run scored against the Braves.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Mariners. Breslow is the only JML pitcher having a good season. Through 15 innings, his WHIP is 1.27 and his ERA is 3.00. He has 15 Ks.

John Grabow picked up his 5th hold of the season, despite a rocky outing. Grabow pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 BBs against the Rockies. I actually attended this game. First walk-off HR I've ever seen - and it was in extra innings. Pretty exciting.

Kapler Gets The Job Done

Ian Kinsler was 2-4 with 1 double (his 5th) and 1 run scored against the Blue Jays.

Kevin Youkilis was 2-4 against the Tigers.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 against the Phillies.

Batting 3rd, Gabe Kapler was 0-3 with 1 RBI against the Mariners. Kapler's sacrifice fly off Cliff Lee in the 8th inning turned out to be the game-winner for the Rays as they beat the Mariners 2-1.

Ike Davis was 0-3 with 1 BB against the Marlins.

Adam Stern was 0-1 against the Phillies.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 K against the Tigers.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Youk Can Walk The Walk

Kevin Youkilis was 0-1 with 5 BBs (a career-high in a game) and 1 run scored against the Tigers. Youk drew 4 BBs in a game in 2006. I've checked Retrosheet. I believe Youk has set a JML record for most walks in a game.

Ike Davis was 1-4 with 1 double (his 5th) against the Marlins.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 against the Phillies.

Ian Kinsler was 0-0 with 1 BB against the Blue Jays.

Gabe Kapler was 0-2 against the Mariners.

Scott Feldman picked up his 4th loss of the year. Feldman went 7 1/3 innings and gave up 5 runs on 9 hits, 1 BB, and 5 Ks against the Blue Jays. Through 7 innings, Feldman had given up just 3 runs on 8 hits and 0 BBs. But Ron Washington pushed his luck and had him go out again for the 8th whereupon he recorded 1 out and allowed 2 baserunners. Darren O'Day then relieved Feldman and served up a HR. It should be noted that Feldman's pitch count coming into the 8th inning was pretty high; he ended up throwing 119 pitches altogether.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 hit and 1 K against the Angels.

John Grabow pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 hit against the Pirates.

Scott Schoeneweis did not record an out. He gave up a hit to the only batter he faced.

I have been informed by a reader that Feldman himself has denied being Jewish. If someone could provide me with proof, I will stop writing about him on the blog. For the record, this has always been my position. An athlete must renounce his ties to Judaism or convert to another religion in order for him to be "ineligible" for blog entries.

A Little Rest And Cortisone Does The Trick

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 10th), and 1 run scored against the Tigers.

Ike Davis was 1-4 with 1 run scored against the Marlins.

Ian Kinsler was 0-3 with 2 BBs and 1 run scored against the Blue Jays.

Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the Phillies.

Adam Stern was 0-1 against the Phillies.

John Grabow pitched 1 scoreless inning on 3 Ks against the Pirates.

Breslow Gives Kinsler A Free Pass

Ike Davis was 1-3 against the Marlins.

Ian Kinsler was 0-2 with 3 BBs (1 IBB by Craig Breslow) against the A's.

Breslow pitched 2 scoreless innings on 1 IBB and 1 K against the Rangers.

Like Mike, If I Could Be Like Mike (Cammalleri)

Don't normally do this, but this definitely warranted its own post. Michael Cammalleri has come up big again, this time against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In yet another stunning upset, Cammalleri led the way as the Habs defeated the heavily favored Penguins in 7 games.

Cammalleri scored 8 points (7 goals, 1 assist) in the series. That gives him a total of 18 points (12 goals, 6 assists) in the 14 games he's played in the playoffs. Cammalleri leads the NHL in goals this postseason and is 3rd in points behind Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews (Go Hawks!).

Marquis To Get Elbow Surgery

After pitching in a rehab start for Class A Potomac on Tuesday, Jason Marquis woke up this morning with elbow stiffness. He will undergo an operation on Friday to remove any fragments from his elbow. Marquis suspects he'll be sidelined until August, but it's possible he could be back on a mound in 4 to 6 weeks.

Ian Kinsler was 2-4 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 4th), 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the A's.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Blue Jays.

Ike Davis was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Nationals.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 1/3 of an inning on 1 K against the Blue Jays.

No More Bus Rides For Adam Stern

Adam Stern has been called up from AAA to replace injured outfielder Carlos Gomez. Stern had a great Spring, which carried over into AAA. He last played in The Show in 2007 with the Orioles.

Brewers manager Ken Macha said that "in all likelihood" Ryan Braun won't return until Friday against the Phillies, at the earliest. Braun said he has "no mobility" in his arm at the moment.

Ian Kinsler was 2-6 with 1 double (his 3rd) against the A's.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-1 with 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Blue Jays.

Gabe Kapler was 1-4 against the Angels.

Ike Davis was 0-5 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored against the Nationals. Davis just missed hitting a grand slam in the 8th inning. The ball sailed over the right field foul pole. The play went under review and was ruled a foul ball. Oh, and remember that catch Ike made the other day in foul territory? He did it again.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Rangers.

Ouch

Ryan Braun was hit in his left elbow by a 92 mph fastball from Tommy Hanson. The Brewers have announced he has a bruised elbow. He is considered day-to-day.

John Grabow received a cortisone shot in his left knee on Saturday. Lou Piniella said he could be ready to pitch as early as tomorrow.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 BB against the Blue Jays.

Ike Davis was 1-4 against the Nationals.

Gabe Kapler was 1-2 against the Angels.

Braun was 0-2 with 1 HBP against the Braves.

Resting Grabow Not A Knee-Jerk Reaction

John Grabow had an MRI on his left knee. The MRI revealed nothing structurally wrong. Lou Piniella said Grabow's knee has bothered him for awhile. Piniella also said he plans on resting Grabow for a few days and reevaluating him when the club returns to Chicago.

Ike Davis was 2-3 with 2 BBs (1 IBB) and 1 RBI against the Giants. Two hits off Tim Lincecum? Yeah, he's arrived.

Ryan Braun was 2-5 with 1 run scored and 1 SB (his 8th) against the Diamondbacks.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 9th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Yankees.

Ian Kinsler was 0-2 with 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 2nd) against the Royals.

Gabe Kapler was 0-3 against the A's. Of course, his teammates didn't fare any better against Dallas Braden.

Scott Feldman received a no decision against the Royals. He went 4 innings and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits, 2 BBs, and 4 Ks. What has happened to this guy?

Saturday, May 8, 2010

Braun Top Of The World

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 2 BBs, 1 double (his 10th), 1 HR (his 6th), 4 RBIs, and 4 runs scored against the Diamondbacks. Braun is in the top 10 in the NL in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, hits, doubles, total bases, RBIs, runs scored, and SBs.

Ian Kinsler was 2-3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI against the Royals. Kinsler gave the Rangers the go-ahead run in the 8th with a clutch hit to right.

Kevin Youkilis was 2-3 with 1 BB against the Yankees.

Ike Davis was 0-3 with 2 BBs (1 IBB) and 1 run scored against the Giants.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 3 hits, 3 BBs, and 2 Ks against the Yankees. Won't be long now...

Ike Is Amazin'

Ike Davis had the best game of his young MLB career tonight. Davis was 2-3 with 1 BB, 2 HRs (his 2nd and 3rd), 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored against the Giants.

It's worth noting that Davis hit both of his long balls off Jonathan Sanchez, who gives lefties a hard time (they were 0 for 17 against him coming into this game). Davis also made an incredible catch in a crucial situation.

Ryan Braun was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 9th), and 1 run scored against the Diamondbacks.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Yankees.

Gabe Kapler was 1-3 with 1 run scored against the A's.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Royals.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 scoreless inning on 1 BB and 2 Ks against the Rays.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 BB, and 1 K against the Reds. Yikes. This is getting ugly.

Stealy Braun

Apologies to Steely Dan for the bad word play...

Ian Kinsler was 3-4 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 2nd), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, and 1 SB (his 1st) against the Royals.

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 run scored and 1 SB (his 7th) against the Dodgers. Braun is swiping bags at an unprecedented rate per his career trends. Last year, he didn't have 7 steals until July 4. Not to say I told you so, but back in January I said he was capable of stealing "around 30 bases."

Kevin Youkilis was 1-2 with 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 1 triple (his 2nd), and 2 runs scored against the Angels.

Gabe Kapler was 1-2 with 1 RBI and 1 SB (his 1st) against the Mariners.

John Grabow pitched 1 scoreless inning against the Pirates.

Kinsler Turns Two In Style

Ryan Braun was 2-6 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored against the Dodgers.

Gabe Kapler was 1-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored against the Mariners.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 against the Angels.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 against the A's. Check out this sweet DP Kinsler started.

Ike Davis was 1-4 against the Reds.

Breaking Down Feldman's Pitching Line

Ryan Braun was 2-5 with 1 triple (his 1st), 1 double (his 8th), 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored against the Dodgers.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-2 with 2 BBs and 1 run scored against the Angels.

Ike Davis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Reds.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the A's.

Gabe Kapler was 0-3 against the Mariners.

Scott Feldman picked up his 3rd loss of the season. He went 7 innings and gave up 7 runs on 10 hits, 3 BBs, and 4 Ks against the A's. Feldman gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and 1 BB in the first 2 innings alone. But in the 5 innings that ensued, he only gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 BBs.

I'd say he took one for the team here, saving his bullpen. Not a good outing any way you slice it - especially against a team like the A's - but Feldman did show some resiliency in the last 5 innings. And he was perfect in the 5th, 6th, and 7th inning.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up 1 run on 1 hit, 1 BB, and 1 K against the Rangers.

Monday, May 3, 2010

See Below

Kevin Youkilis was 2-3 with 2 BBs (1 IBB), 1 HBP, 1 HR (his 5th), 1 double (his 8th), 1 RBI, and 3 runs scored against the Angels.

Ian Kinsler was 2-4 with 1 double (his 1st) against the A's.

Ike Davis was 1-5 with 1 double (his 4th) and 1 run scored against the Reds. Davis faced Mike Leake, a former teammate from Arizona State.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 1 inning and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 BBs, and 1 K. Fortunately for Schoeneweis, there was no chance he could blow the lead. Terry Francona has used him a lot - and not just against lefties. Has Schoeneweis pitched well? No. Has Francona played to his strengths as a lefty specialist? No. Will he be cut soon? Yes. Is that fair? Probably.
