Kevin Youkilis had the day off. His left foot is still sore after fouling a ball off it yesterday. Youk underwent a precautionary X-ray, and the results came back negative. At this point, he's considered day-to-day.

John Grabow picked up his 1st win of the season against the Giants. He pitched 2 innings and gave up 1 run on 1 hit, 3 BBs (1 IBB), and 1 K. Grabow got out of bases loaded jam with 1 out in the 12th inning. It wasn't pretty, but he got the job done.

Marquis Brilliant Against Mariners

Batting cleanup, Danny Valencia was 0-4 against the Giants.

Jason Marquis received a no decision against the Mariners, although he earned a win. Marquis pitched 8 scoreless innings on 3 hits, 3 BBs, and 4 Ks. His groundball to flyball ratio was 14-3. He currently has a 3.53 ERA. His peripheral stats suggest this is the best he's ever pitched; he has a 3.60 FIP and 3.73 xFIP. His BABIP of .303 is actually a little high, considering his career BABIP is .285. So one would expect him to give up a few less hits moving forward. He's utilizing his changeup and cutter a lot more than he has in the past. The changeup, in particular, seems to have become his bread and butter.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning on 2 hits against the Mets.

"What is this, the Dark Ages?"

Ike Davis had his left ankle examined today, and the results were not encouraging. In fact, Ike could be facing microfracture ankle surgery if things don't improve, which would end his season. Three weeks from now, Ike will perform some baseball-related activities. An official decision will be made then.

Turns out the protective boot the Mets told Ike to wear could have actually impaired his healing due to a lack of circulation. I really think the Mets' training and medical staff have handled this situation poorly from the very beginning. They just don't seem all that competent. I can almost hear Leonard "Bones" McCoy reprimanding them with, "What is this, the Dark Ages?"

Pinch hitting, Sam Fuld was 1-1 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 13th), 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 16th) against the Brewers.

Maddon's Interesting Stall Tactic

Batting cleanup, Kevin Youkilis was 2-4 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 20th), 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Padres.

Pinch hitting, Sam Fuld was 0-0 with 1 BB, 1 run scored, and 1 SB (his 15th) against the Brewers. Oddly enough, Fuld was sent to the mound in the 8th inning to warm up. Yeah, you read that right. Fuld was in the game in the pitcher's spot and wasn't required to actually throw a pitch because he was already in the game. Joe Maddon said it was a "stall tactic" to allow Cesar Ramos extra time to warm up. If you don't believe me, check it out.

Batting leadoff, Ian Kinsler was 0-5 with 1 run scored against the Astros.

Ryan Braun was a late scratch due to an upper respiratory viral infection.

To Quote LD: Pretty, Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good

Batting 6th, Danny Valencia was 1-3 with 1 HR (his 7th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Padres. Valencia's solo shot turned out to be the game-winner for the Twins. He was taken out of the game in the 9th inning with a biceps or triceps strain. For now, he is considered day-to-day.

Valencia Ends Long Ball Drought

Batting 6th, Danny Valencia was 1-4 with 1 HR (his 6th), 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Padres. Also made this nice play at 3rd. Didn't know he had hops like that. This was Valencia's 1st long ball since May 21.

Batting cleanup, Kevin Youkilis was 1-2 with 2 RBIs against the Brewers. Youk had to leave the game because of a "stomach illness."

Batting leadoff, Ian Kinsler was 1-5 with 1 run scored against the Braves.

Batting 3rd, Ryan Braun was 1-4 against the Red Sox.

Jason Marquis received a no decision against the Orioles. He went 5 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 12 hits, 0 BBs, and 3 Ks. His groundball to flyball ratio was 14-1. Sounds like he got a little unlucky, as there were more than a few groundballs with eyes. At the plate, he had a sacrifice bunt and scored a run.

Kinsler's HR Milestone

Batting leadoff, Ian Kinsler was 2-3 with 2 BBs, 1 HR (his 8th), 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, and 1 SB (his 13th) against the Yankees. The solo shot was Kinsler's 100th career HR. Kinsler and Shawn Green are the only 2 JMLs with 100 HRs and 100 SBs (Ryan Braun will probably join them next season). Kinsler has a legitimate shot at 200 HRs and 200 SBs when it's all said and done.

Batting cleanup, Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 HR (his 10th), 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Rays. Youk's 3-run shot in the 7th inning was the game-winner for the Red Sox.

Another Angel In The Outfield

If you're a long-time reader of the blog, you know I've talked up my brother, Zach, the last few years. For good reason. And while he may be my little brother, he is neither little, nor did he need me to talk him up.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Angels selected Zach in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. I firmly believe he should have been taken higher than he was, but that's another story.

I just want my bro to know that I could not be any prouder of him. In fact, our entire family is proud of Zach. He was blessed with God-given ability, and he has harnessed that natural ability and worked very hard to get to where he is today.

This year at Eastern Illinois, Zach put up a line of .349/.419/.554 for an OPS of .973. He led Eastern in 10 offensive categories (runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, total bases, average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, walks, and stolen bases). He was 2nd on the team in HRs, extra base hits, and RBIs. He batted leadoff 28 times and in the three hole 23 times.

For his career at Eastern, Zach's final line was .362/.450/.560 for an OPS of 1.010 in 539 ABs. He hit 23 HRs, 32 doubles, 3 triples, drove in 104 runs, scored 131 runs, stole 23 bases, had 302 total bases, and had a BB/K ratio of 76/85. He played right field his freshman year and third base his sophomore year. This year, he mostly played center field (25 starts) and right field. He also played third base and first base.

Zach was a 2011 Ohio Valley Conference First Team Selection and finished his career with the 6th best BA and 5th best OBP of all time at Eastern. For someone with Zach's skill set, drive, and work ethic the sky is the limit. The Angels have a helluva ballplayer on their hands, and an even better person.

A Pinch Hit See-Ya-Later From Braun

Ryan Braun was supposed to have the day off, but with his team trailing the Marlins 4-5 in the 9th inning, he made a pinch hit appearance. And he hit a 2-run shot to win the game for the Brew Crew! Braun was 1-1 with 1 HR (his 13th), 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored. It was Braun's 1st career pinch hit HR, his 1st long ball since May 15, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

A Setback To Ike's Comeback

An MRI revealed that Ike Davis' injured left ankle hasn't healed. Ike will wear a protective boot on his ankle for the next 3 weeks. Initially, the Mets anticipated Ike's return in late May or early June. It now looks like we won't see him back on the field until July.
