The Right Stuff

It's starting to sound cliche, but Jason Marquis and Scott Feldman were once again on their game tonight.

Marquis, in particular, had it going on the mound against the Padres. He pitched 8 shutout innings on 6 hits, 4 BBs, and 6 Ks to pick up his 7th win of the season. The 6 Ks were a season-high. It was also the 3rd time in 2009 where he's gone at least 8 innings. The man is a horse this year. Marquis lowered his ERA to 3.93. At this rate, another 15-win season may not be out of the question. And maybe more...

Feldman has been money since being moved out of the bullpen into the starting rotation for the Rangers. Tonight was no exception. Feldman picked up his 4th win of the season with his 5th consecutive quality start against the A's. He went 6 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, 3 BBs, and 2 Ks. He lowered his ERA to 3.91.

Ryan Braun was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double, and 1 run scored against the Reds. It was his 10th double of the season.

In a doubleheader today, Ian Kinsler went 0-5 with 3 BBs and 2 runs scored. He hit his 13th HR earlier this week against the Yankees.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Blue Jays.

Gabe Kapler was 0-1 with 1 BB against the Twins.

Craig Breslow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Rangers. Breslow's ERA isn't so hot, but his WHIP is 1.24.

Breslow is a really good looking pitcher and was given up on by his previous organization much too quickly.

Marquis has been amazing. I still can't help feeling that Feldman has been a bit lucky thus far, but he is doing really well.

I'm starting to become a Feldman believer. I read that he changed his mechanics and his arm slot in the offseason, which has added 1 or 2 mph on his fastball.

His track record would seem to indicate that this great run he's had might be a fluke, but like I said I'm starting to believe it's more than just a fluke.

Well, as I've always said, it's stupid to argue with success. I've just been listening to the whispers of Neyer for too long. :)

In general, you're right about pitchers with low K-rates. I think Feldman could potentially be like a Nick Blackburn.
