A Masterful Performance from Marquis

Coming off one of the worst starts of his career, Jason Marquis had one of the best starts of his career tonight against Chad Billingsley and the Dodgers. Marquis improved to 10-5 as he tossed his 3rd career complete game shutout.

And it was an efficient CG at that. Only took him 86 pitches to do it! It was also his 2nd CG of the season. Marquis didn't issue any walks, gave up just 2 hits, and struck out 3.

Strangely enough, it's the exact same pitching line as Marquis' 1st CG shutout from 2005. That was also an efficient outing (91 pitches).

Marquis had a good game at the plate as well. He was 1-3 with 2 RBIs. His ERA went down from 4.22 to 3.87. His WHIP went down from 1.41 to 1.31.

Marquis now has 6 consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins. His career high in wins is 15, set back in 2004 with the Cardinals. Could we be looking at 20 wins this year? Time will tell.

Interesting to note that Steve Stone's career high in wins was also 15 before he went on to win 25 games in 1980 when he won Cy Young. That was Stone's 10 season in the Bigs. This happens to be Marquis' 10th season in the Bigs...

Scott Feldman battled through 6 innings to pick up his 6th win of the year
against the Angels. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits, 2 BBs, and 3 Ks. With the win, Feldman improved to 6-2 on the season.

Kevin Youkilis had himself a game against the Orioles. Youk was 3-5 with 1 HBP, 1 double (his 19th), 1 HR (his 13th), 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.

Ryan Braun was 3-4 with 1 double (his 18th), 4 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Mets.

Ian Kinsler was 1-5 with 1 HR (his 19th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Angels.

Scott Schoeneweis gave up 1 hit to the only batter he faced against the Reds.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Cubs to pick up his 14th hold of the season. He gave up 2 hits and had 2 Ks.

On This Date In 1962

Sandy Koufax hurled his 1st no-no against the New York Mets. He issued 5 BBs and struck out 13.

Not Much to Report on Today

Kevin Youkilis was 1-5 with 1 double (his 18th) against the Orioles. He was robbed of a HR by Adam Jones in center field.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 against the Angels.

Ryan Braun was 1-5 against the Mets.

Brad Ausmus was 0-1 against the Rockies.

Welcome Back, Sam!

The Cubs have called up OF Sam Fuld from Triple-A Iowa to replace Aaron Miles, who's heading to the DL. Fuld had a cup of coffee in the Majors back in 2007.

And the revolving door continues. Josh Whitesell was sent down to Triple-A Reno about a week ago.

Also, I believe 26-year old right-hander Ryan Sadowski is an MOT. But don't quote me on that. (Actually, you can quote me on that; it's been confirmed.) Sadowski made his Major League Debut yesterday for the Giants against the Brewers. And it was a good one. He pitched 6 innings of shutout ball on 4 hits, 3 BBs, and 2 Ks.

Breslow Pitching Well in Cali

Craig Breslow's ERA with the Twins this year was 6.28 in 14 1/3 innings. With the Athletics, his ERA is 2.30 in 15 2/3 innings. Today, he pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Rockies. He gave up 1 hit and struck out 2.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Braves.

Gabe Kapler was 1-3 with 1 double (his 12th) and 1 RBI against the Marlins. He's brought his average up to .250.

Ryan Braun was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Giants.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Padres.

Zack Greinke, C.C. Sabathia, Scott Feldman?

Scott Feldman is pitching like a new man. Other than his role as a reliever in 2006, Feldman hasn't had a whole lot of success in the Majors. But at 26, the 6'5" right-hander seems to have finally arrived.

We're three months into the season, and his WHIP of 1.172 is ranked 10th in the AL. He's behind the likes of Greinke, Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Matt Garza, Mark Buehrle, Jered Weaver, Scott Baker, and Edwin Jackson.

He's also ranked 8th in the AL in hits per 9 IP at 7.764. That's slightly ahead of Justin Verlander and teammate Kevin Millwood.

Feldman credits a new and improved cut fastball and keeping the ball low to his newfound success. Can he sustain this level of pitching? That remains to be seen.

But one thing's for sure: with all due respect to Jason Marquis, we haven't witnessed anything remotely like this from a JML starter since the days of Steve Stone.

A Little Patience Goes a Braun Way

In his first 2 seasons (264 games), Ryan Braun drew a total of 71 BBs. We're 72 games into 2009, and Braun nearly has half that amount with 34 BBs.

Yesterday, Braun was 2-4 with 1 double, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Giants. Today, Braun was 2-4 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 17th), and 1 run scored.

Yesterday, Ian Kinsler was 2-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 17th), 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the Padres. Today, Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 run scored.

Yesterday, Kevin Youkilis was 0-3 with 1 BB against the Braves. Today, Youk was 2-3 with 1 BB, 1 triple, and 1 run scored.

Brad Ausmus was 0-1 against the Mariners.

Yesterday, Craig Breslow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Rockies. He had 1 K. Today, Breslow pitched 1 1/3 inning of scoreless relief. He had 1 K.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Royals. He gave up 1 hit and had 1 K. His ERA is now 3.86.

Yesterday, Scott Schoeneweis gave up 1 run in 1/3 of an inning against the Angels.

Aaron Poreda pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Cubs. He hasn't given up a run in his first 5 innings in The Show.

Poreda Notches First Career Win

Aaron Poreda got his 1st career win today against the Dodgers. He pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief in the 13th inning. He had 2 Ks.

Scott Feldman got back on track with a quality start against the Diamondbacks. He went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 BB, and 1 K.

Ian Kinsler was 2-5 with 2 BBs, 1 double (his 16th), and 3 runs scored against the Diamondbacks. Also swiped his 16th bag of the season.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 with 1 HR (his 16th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored.

Gabe Kapler was 1-1 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 11th), and 1 run scored against the Phillies. Also swiped his 3rd bag of the season.

Brad Ausmus was 0-4 against the White Sox, but he did throw out the speedy Scotty Pods at 2nd base.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-1 in a pinch-hit AB against the Nationals.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Indians. He walked 3 and struck out 2.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Rangers. He struck out the only batter he faced.

In other news, Israeli forward Omri Casspi was the 23rd overall pick today in the NBA draft. He was taken by the Sacramento Kings. Casspi is 21 years old, 6-9, and 220 lbs. In 1996, Doron Sheffer was selected in the second round, but Casspi is poised to become the first Israeli to actually play in the NBA. It's also worth noting that the Kings are in the Western Conference, so we'll likely see Casspi play Jordan Farmar (26th overall pick in 2006) at some point next season.

Sometimes You Get the Bear, Sometimes the Bear Gets You

Jason Marquis hit the showers early against the Angels. He just didn't have it tonight. That much was clear as he picked up his 5th loss of the season. Marquis gave up 8 runs (7 earned) in 3 1/3 innings on 9 hits, 2 BBs, and 4 Ks. His ERA went from 3.71 to 4.22.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 run scored against the Diamondbacks. Also swiped his 15th bag of the season.

Ryan Braun was 2-4 against the Twins.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-3 with 1 BB and 1 run scored.

Youk No Fluke

Last year, Kevin Youkilis finished 3rd in MVP voting with a .958 OPS. This year, that OPS is actually a little higher. Coming into today's action, it was sitting at 1.029. Against the Nationals Youk was 2-5 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 17th), 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.

Gabe Kapler was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 double (his 10th) against the Phillies.

Ian Kinsler was 1-5 with 1 RBI against the Diamondbacks.

Ryan Braun was 0-3 with 2 BBs against the Twins.

Aaron Poreda pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Dodgers on 2 hits and 1 K.

Kapler Slugging His Way to a Respectable Season

Gabe Kapler isn't hitting for an exceptionally high average. Nor is he getting on base at an exceptionally high rate. But his slugging percentage is well above his career mark of .426. Last year's .498 clip with the Brew Crew was a personal best. This year with the Bay Rays his slugging percentage is .484. Not bad. Today against the Mets he was 1-1 with 1 double and 2 RBIs.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 run scored against the Braves.

Ian Kinsler was 0-2 with 2 BBs against the Giants.

Brad Ausmus was 0-2 with 2 sacrifice bunts against the Angels.

Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the Tigers.

Scott Schoeneweis faced 1 batter and gave up a single before he was relieved by Jon Rauch. Rauch would later let in Scott's baserunner.

Same thing with Craig Breslow. Breslow pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up 1 hit before he was relieved by Russ Springer, who served one up to Kevin Kouzmanoff and let Craig's baserunner cross the plate.

Braun and Kinsler Padding the Stats

Ryan Braun was 4-5 with 1 HR (his 15th), 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Tigers. Also swiped his 6th bag of the season.

Ian Kinsler was 2-4 with 1 BB, 1 HR (his 18th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Giants. Also swiped his 14th bag of the season.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI against the Braves.

Gabe Kapler was 1-3 with 1 double (his 8th) and 1 RBI against the Mets.

John Grabow picked up his 2nd blown save of the season against the Rockies after he gave up a 3-run shot to Chris Iannetta in the 10th inning.

On This Date In 1965

Sandy Koufax threw a 1-hitter against Warren Spahn and the New York Mets. Koufax issued 2 BBs and struck out 12.

Also, On This Date In 1971...

As a rookie, Steve Stone outdueled Dave Roberts and the San Diego Padres. Stone gave up 3 hits, issued 3 BBs, and struck out 11 in the complete game shutout. Roberts went 7 innings and gave up 1 run on 6 hits, 6 BBs, and 4 Ks.

Marquis Goes the Distance - For All Intents and Purposes

Jason Marquis picked up his 9th win today against the Pirates. He pitched 8 2/3 innings (125 pitches) and gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, 3 BBs, and 3 Ks. He was also 1-3 at the plate with 1 run scored.

Scott Feldman picked up his 2nd loss of the season against the Giants. He went 6 innings and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, 1 BB, and 5 Ks. It looks strange on the box score to see another non-quality start from Feldman. Time to get another streak going.

Ian Kinsler was 1-5 with 1 double against the Giants.

Ryan Braun was 0-4 with 1 run scored against the Tigers.

Kevin Youkilis was also 0-4 with 1 run scored against the Braves. Yesterday, Youk hit his 12th HR of the year against the Marlins.

Craig Breslow pitched 2/3 of scoreless relief against the Padres to pick up his 8th hold of the season. Breslow also pitched 1 scoreless inning yesterday against the Dodgers.

Scott Schoeneweis gave up a solo shot to Russell Branyan. Branyan was the only batter he faced.

Aaron Poreda pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Reds.

On This Date In 1970

Mike Epstein had 8 RBIs in a game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Whoa, Does Kinsler Read The Blog?

Yesterday, I wrote that Ian Kinsler needed to "pick it up on the basepaths" if he wants to be a part of that elite and elusive 30/30 club. So, what does he do today? Steal 2 bases. Coincidence? You tell me.

Kinsler was 2-4 with 1 double (His 14th), 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the Astros. The 2 stolen bases gives him 13 on the year.

Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 double (His 15th), 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the Indians.

Josh Whitesell was 1-4 with 1 BB, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Royals.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-4 against the Marlins.

Gabe Kapler was 0-1 against the Rockies.

John Grabow pitched 2 scoreless innings against the Twins. It wasn't pretty, though, as he gave up a hit and walked 3 while striking out 1.

Scott Schoeneweis pitched 2/3 of scoreless relief against the Royals.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Dodgers. He gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on his 1 BB.

Kinsler and Kapler are Stellar

Ian Kinsler was 3-4 with 1 BB, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored against the Astros. That gives him 17 HRs on the year. He might have a serious shot at a 30/30 season. But he's got to pick it up on the basepaths if he wants to do it. Last year at this time, he had 17 SBs. Right now, he has 11.

Gabe Kapler was 3-4 with 1 HR, 1 triple, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Rockies. He's now homered in 4 straight games and seen his average rise about 50 points during that 4-game stretch.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 BB, 1 double (His 16th), and 1 run scored against the Marlins.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Indians.

Craig Breslow walked James Loney, the only batter he faced.

Braun and Fielder: Is There a Better Duo in Baseball?

Ryan Braun had a big night. So did Prince Fielder. Together, they combined for 11 RBIs against the Indians. Braun was 3-5 with 1 BB, 1 triple, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Also swiped his 5th bag of the season. So much for him and Youk being tied. He now has 14 HRs and 47 RBIs.

On This Date In 1940

Harry Danning hit for the cycle for the New York Giants against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

A Fourth Outfielder and a Backup Catcher Getting the Job Done

Gabe Kapler was 2-2 with 2 BBs, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Nationals. He's starting to heat up. Nothing like a series with the Nationals to get you back on track.

Brad Ausmus reached a personal milestone today. He drove in his 600th career RBI against the Rangers. He was 2-2 with 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 double, and 1 RBI. Also threw out fellow catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia at 2nd base. Ausmus is hitting .317 on the year.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 against the White Sox.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-4 with 1 BB against the Phillies.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Dodgers. His average has dipped to .260. Definitely in a slump right now.

Josh Whitesell was 0-3 with 1 BB against the Astros.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Tigers to pick up his 11th hold of the season.

Finally, I guess I'm not the only guy who relishes JML matchups. Aaron Poreda had this to say on facing Braun: "I actually thought about that when he was coming up, the battle of the Jews," Poreda laughed. "But he's a great player, amazing, and I was just trying to do my best."

Hey! Who Turned Out The Lights?

If you had to nitpick on Scott Feldman this year, the one thing you could say is he hasn't pitched 7 innings as yet. It looked like that was about to change today as he towed the slab against the Dodgers.

Feldman was cruising through 5 innings (57 pitches) before something inexplicable happened; the lights at the Ballpark in Arlington malfunctioned. The game was delayed an hour and a half, and by the time play had resumed, Feldman's day was done. Feldman gave up 0 runs on 3 hits, 0 BBs, and 1 K. His WHIP is 1.17. His ERA is 3.70.

Jason Marquis didn't get his 9th win tonight, but that was through no fault of his own. Marquis left the game with a 3-1 lead before Manny Corpas relinquished that lead in the 8th, got a blown save, and also the win. Go figure. Marquis went 7 innings and gave up 1 run on 7 hits, 3 BBs, and 2 Ks. Also had an RBI walk with the bases loaded. His WHIP is 1.35. His ERA is 3.77.

Josh Whitesell was 1-3 with 1 BB, 1 double, and 1 RBI against the Astros.

Kevin Youkilis was 0-3 with 3 BBs and 1 run scored against the Phillies.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 against the Dodgers.

Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the White Sox.

Scott Schoeneweis returned to action for the D-Backs and picked up right where he left off. He pitched 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief against the Astros. His WHIP is 1.32. His ERA is 2.38. Here's hoping the baseball diamond offers Scott some catharsis.

Gabe "The Babe"

That's what Mel Rojas Jr. called him. And if you ask Gabe Kapler's teammates, I'm sure they'd agree. So far, 2009 hasn't been kind to Gabe. But tonight was his night. After Kapler got a reprieve from an error by the usually sure-handed Nick Johnson in foul territory, he hit a game-winning pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning against the Nationals. It was only his 2nd HR of the year, but man, oh man, was it a big one!

Kevin Youkilis was 1-5 with 1 HBP, 1 HR, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Phillies. Also swiped his 4th bag of the season. Youk's career-high for stolen bases is 5; that was in 2006. If you can believe it, he actually has as many stolen bases now as Ryan Braun.

Speaking of Ryan Braun, he was 2-5 with 1 run scored against the White Sox.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 against the Dodgers.

Aaron Poreda made his MLB debut tonight against the Brewers and threw the ball fairly well in his relief appearance, in spite of what had to be some first game jitters. He pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Gave up 1 hit and had 3 Ks, including one against Braun. The first batter he faced was Matt Gamel, who also went down on strikes.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning and gave up 1 run against the Tigers.

That Ball is Long Braun

What can I say? Puns are fun. Ryan Braun was 3-5 with 1 HR, 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Rockies. It was his 13th HR of the year.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB against the Yankees.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Blue Jays.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Youk's Blast Rankles Yanks

Kevin Youkilis was 1-4 with 1 BB, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Yankees. His 10th HR gave the Red Sox the lead in the 4th inning. They never looked back.

Ryan Braun was 1-2 with 2 BBs, 1 double, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Rockies. Also swiped his 4th bag of the season.

John Grabow pitched very well against the Braves, giving the Bucs 2 scoreless innings of relief with no BBs, no hits, and 2 Ks. His ERA is now 3.67. Grabow picked up his 10th hold of the season.

Craig Breslow pitched 2/3 of scoreless relief against the Twins.

Congratulations to my brother's teammates, Brett Nommensen and Jordan Kreke, on getting drafted in the 8th round by the Bay Rays and the 13th round by the Braves respectively.

Poreda Gets The Call

White Sox top pitching prospect Aaron Poreda has just been called up from Birmingham to replace Bartolo Colon, who went on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his left knee. The 22-year old southpaw was 5-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 69 Ks in 64 innings with Birmingham this season. Mazel tov, Aaron!

Kevin Youkilis was 2-4 with 1 BB and 1 run scored against the Yankees. Also swiped his 3rd bag of the season.

Ryan Braun was 1-4 with 1 double against the Rockies.

Ian Kinsler was 0-4 against the Blue Jays.

Josh Whitesell is starting to heat up. He followed up his 1st career multi-hit game yesterday with his 2nd multi-hit game today. He was 2-3 with 1 BB and 1 double against the Giants.

I'd also like to congratulate my brother's teammate, Tyler Kehrer, on getting drafted 48th overall by the Angels.

Payback

Jason Marquis picked up his NL-leading 8th win today against the Cardinals. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 BB, and 4 Ks. He was also 1-3 at the plate with 1 run scored. The Cards aren't the only former team Marquis has beaten this year. The Braves and the Cubs also share that distinction. Against all 3 former teams, Marquis has given up just 4 runs in 21 2/3 innings. That comes out to a 1.66 ERA. Think he was geared up for these games?

Scott Feldman's remarkable run of 6 consecutive quality starts came to an end today against the Blue Jays, although he didn't pitch too badly. He went 6 innings and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, 2 BBs, and 2 Ks. It was Feldman's first loss of the year.

Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with 1 BB against the Blue Jays.

Gabe Kapler was 1-4 with 1 HR, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Yankees. It was Kapler's 1st HR of the year.

Josh Whitesell was 2-3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI against the Padres.

John Grabow pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief against the Braves. His ERA is now 3.96.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning against the Twins.

In what was arguably his best performance, Ken Holtzman pitched 12 shutout innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 12.

Also, On This Date In 1975...

Ken Holtzman threw a 1-hitter against the Detroit Tigers in a complete game shutout. He issued 1 BB and struck out 7.

Back, Back, Back, Back... Braun!

Ryan Braun greeted Tommy Hanson's much-anticipated debut with 2 balls that didn't stay in the yard. Braun was 2-4 with 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs scored against the Braves. That gives him 12 HRs on the year.

Kevin Youkilis was 1-3 with 1 BB and 1 double (his 15th) against the Rangers. Coming into today's game, Youk was leading the Majors in OBP at a hefty .470 clip.

Ian Kinsler was 1-5 against the Red Sox. His average has dipped to .274.

Brad Ausmus was 0-4 against the Phillies.

Josh Whitesell was 1-6 with 2 BBs, 1 double, and 3 RBIs against the Padres.

Craig Breslow pitched 1/3 of an inning of relief against the Orioles.

Back-To-Back Jacks For Kinsler

Ian Kinsler has homered in 2 straight games. Yesterday, he was 1-4 with 1 BB, 1 HR, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored against the Yankees. Today, he was 1-4 with 1 HR, 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored against the Red Sox. That gives him 15 HRs on the year.

Yesterday, Kevin Youkilis was 0-1 with 1 BB, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored against the Tigers. Today, he was 0-4 with 1 BB against the Rangers.

Yesterday, Ryan Braun was 2-4 with 1 double and 1 run scored against the Marlins. Today, he was 1-5 with 1 run scored against the Braves.

Josh Whitesell was 1-1 with a pinch-hit RBI double against the Padres.

On This Date In 1964

Sandy Koufax hurled his 3rd no-no against the Philadelphia Phillies. But for his 1 BB to Dick Allen (my dad's favorite player), he would have had a perfect game. He fanned 12.

Feldman Does It Again

Tonight marked Scott Feldman's 6th consecutive quality start. But who's counting? Feldman improved to 5-0 on the season as he went 6 1/3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, 3 BBs, and 5 Ks against the Yankees. His ERA is 3.79. His WHIP is 1.19. His name is Scott Feldman.

Against the Astros, Jason Marquis wasn't nearly as sharp. He picked up his 4th loss of the season as he went 6 innings and gave up 5 runs on 10 hits, 4 BBs, and 2 Ks.

Kevin Youkilis had a good game against the Tigers. He was 2-3 with 1 BB, 1 double (his 14th), 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. Also swiped his 2nd bag of the season. He's dangerous on the basepaths.

Ryan Braun went deep for the 10th time this year against the Marlins. He was 2-5 with 1 HR, 2 RBIs, and 1 run scored.

Ian Kinsler was 2-3 with 2 BBs, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. He now has 40 RBIs on the year. As a leadoff man. That's just mind-boggling.

Gabe Kapler continues to struggle. He was 0-1 against the Royals. Still under the Mendoza Line.

Josh Whitesell was 0-3 against the Dodgers.

On This Date In 1971

Ken Holtzman hurled his 2nd no-no against the Cincinnati Reds. He issued 4 BBs and struck out 6.

Whitesell Comes Through

Josh Whitesell came through for the D-Backs with a two-run double in the 2nd inning against the division rival Dodgers. Whitesell was 1-2 with 1 BB, 1 double, and 2 RBIs.

Ryan Braun was 0-4 against the Marlins.

Craig Breslow picked up another loss for the A's, this time against the White Sox. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up 1 run on 1 BB and 2 Ks. It was a tough loss, though, as he wasn't the reliever who served up the game-winning home run to Jim Thome. Congrats to Thome on his 550th bomb. Hope you did it the right way, Jim.
